Your Calibration Setup

Calibration builds on your Aspherix® installation. This is what each part does.

ASPHERIX® - REQUIRED

The simulation engine

Runs every calibration simulation. More parallel licenses let you run more test cases at the same time

+ ASPHERIX® CALIBRATION

Templates and optimizer

Numerous lab test templates, the optimizer and tutorials for common tests.

+ CFDEM®COUPLING - OPTIONAL

For CFD-DEM tests

Needed only for templates with fluid flow such as Ergun test or the air jet.

How Calibration Works

From a measurement file to a calibrated parameter set in four steps.

1

Measure in the lab

Run a standard test such as a shear cell, angle of repose or rotating drum, and save the results as a simple data file.

2

Set up the calibration

Pick a template for your test, define the particles and set the parameters to calibrate with their ranges.

3

Let the optimizer run

Aspherix® simulates the test again and again. A global optimizer picks each new parameter set to match the simulation and measurement.

4

Use the result

Get the best parameter set, plus the full history of every tested set, ready for your process simulation.

Ready-to-Use Lab Test Templates

Each template reproduces a lab test in Aspherix® and compares it with your measurement. Some examples are:

Flow and angle of repose

Static angle of repose · Dynamic angle of repose · Rotating drum · GranuDrum™ · Inclined wall · Slump test

Shear, density and compression

Schulze ring shear cell · Jenike shear cell · Bulk density test · Uniaxial compression · Ellipsoid compression test

Rheology and deformation

Oscillatory rheometer · Oscillatory rheometer (Burgers model) · Brabender · Solid deformation with bonds

Heat transfer and wear

Heat transfer in dense packing · Heat transfer in loose packing · Wear

Process and application tests

Electrode calendering · Rotary kiln · Soil calibration · Tillage calibration

CFD-DEM tests (require CFDEM®coupling)

Ergun test (pressure drop) · Air jet · Volume fraction test · Radiation heat transfer

Built for Real Calibration Projects

Several parameters at once

Calibrate parameters together, or one after another with each result carried forward.

Several lab tests combined

Fit one parameter set to multiple tests, e.g. two shear cell measurements of a cohesive powder.

Parallel and on the cluster

Run calibration cases in parallel with MPI, or submit them to your cluster queue.

Resume where you stopped

Continue an interrupted calibration from the last iteration.

Your own lab tests

Add user templates with your own quality function, written in Python or GNU Octave.

Image-based input

Use drum images directly: the rotating drum template pre-processes them with OpenCV.
